Author, Teri Daniels, Donates Books and Hosts a Unique, Online Scrapbook
New York, NY – (MARKET WIRE) –3/30/2004 --What’s an author to do when a publisher goes under and a fine book is destined for the shredder? Most would lament and say goodbye. Instead, Teri Daniels cried out, “Momma’s coming!” She then made a fat purchase, and arranged to give books away.
The title with a new destiny, The Feet in the Gym, tells the story of school kids who leave unusual footprints behind. As impetus for an enrichment program, the feet have embarked on a tour of the USA. First stop, all fifty states. Inspired by the sharing club, BookCrossing.com, Daniels gifted picture books like a Christmas elf. After randomly selecting schools via the Internet, she mailed a free copy and an invitation to participate in a social studies club, to fifty, first-grade classrooms. The pattern was repeated for additional grades, and now adults can enroll any class in grades 1-6 by completing a form at www.TeriDanielsBooks.com
The touring project, dubbed “The Feet Across America Club” encourages students to share facts and feelings about their home states through poems, letters, essays, postcards, photos and drawings. To receive theses kid-generated gems, Daniels has dedicated fifty STATE PAGES online. This burgeoning scrap book shows children the nation through the eyes of their peers.
Why gift the books? Daniels is opting for the positive. “My intent,” she shares, “is to take a sour experience and make a vat of sweet lemonade.” What motivated the USA theme?
“In our American culture,” Daniels asserts, “kids pay more attention to Hollywood than anywhere, and that can’t be good. It’s heartening for students to think about our country
and each other, real classes in Hawaii, Nebraska, Ohio, Alaska—all fifty states.”
The recipe for lemonade is already satisfying. After receiving her free copy and an invitation to add to the national scrapbook, Kathleen Casazza, first grade teacher from Parkview Elementary in Westville, NJ, wrote, “What a nice surprise! I feel like I almost won the lottery!”
